When luxury is really Nature in action
One of my favourite things to do when I get the chance is to make my own creams and body butters. I have been making them for years, initially just for my own use and to gift friends. It’s so gratifying to get such positive feedback when friends want them as presents for their friends and family too.
Our hardworking skin
Our skin is our largest organ, comprised of complex layers. Because it is on the outside of the body, acting as a protective barrier, we can forget that our skin absorbs a lot of what we put on it. We are exposed to a lot from our environment also. The sun’s rays are essential for boosting Vitamin D levels, but we also have to be mindful of over-exposure to the these rays. Some chemicals, microplastics and other toxins also become absorbed through the skin.
Next time you have a shower, take a look at what you use regularly as part of your routine for hair washing, showering, applying cleanser and creams. It can be a long list! Detailed analyses of the ingredients contained in many conventional products can be alarming. Many are derived from petroleum for example, or have synthetic perfume agents added to waters and oils.
The move to Natural
The growing interest in more natural and safer products is here to stay and I’m glad to see this surge in demand. For all my products, I source the purest of ingredients, using certified organic oils and base butters, so no pesticides or other toxic chemicals. We frequently hear about ‘endocrine disruptors’, meaning that some of these chemicals can interfere with the body’s hormones such as oestrogen and testosterone. This has implications for how our body functions, ranging from fertility or menstrual problems, to problems with headaches and fatigue.
HoH products using high quality oils
My rich face cream contains Organic Rosehip and Jojoba oils, with Rosewater and a blend of natural vitamin rich plant oils, hyaluronic acid and seaweed. It hydrates, protects the skin and reduces redness. A small amount goes a long way. I find my skin drinks it up when I apply it every morning.
Body butters contain solid and semi-solid base butters such as Organic Shea and Cocao Butter, Coconut oil or Apricot. They are super moisturising, smell great and absorb well.
I also love to make oil infusions of some herbs to make healing creams – Selfheal, Calendula, Chickweed are wonderful for the regular bumps, rashes, itchy skin and bruises of everyday life. Comfrey is the go-to for sprains and breaks and I love getting feedback from those who have had bad fractures and are thrilled with the faster healing.
