Treating Alopecia with herbal medicine

 Worried about hair loss?

In the early days of my herbal practise I saw cases of alopecia only infrequently. However, over the last 10 years, the number of referrals has been steadily increasing to the point where treating hair loss is a significant proportion of my case-load. There are a number of different types of alopecia, the main two being alopecia areata, and androgenetic alopecia.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is an auto-immune condition and usually starts with small patches appearing on the scalp where some hair has fallen out. If untreated, this can progress to patches growing larger and more appearing.  It is a distressing condition as it can be very visible and people witness more hair falling out on a daily basis.  The situation does sometimes resolve spontaneously, but often requires long-term treatment.

Androgenetic alopecia

The second type is driven by hormonal imbalances and is characterised by more diffuse hair loss, often worse at the hairline.

Whilst the causes of alopecia vary, a common feature underpinning the majority of cases is STRESS. This is particularly so in the case of Alopecia areata, but both of these imbalances can be caused or exacerbated by the level of stress we are experiencing. It is vital that the effect of stress on our health and wellbeing is recognised and that we take effective steps to contain such negative outcomes.

How herbs can help hair loss

Herbal medicine can play an important part in helping with hair re-growth.   Adaptogens support many of the endocrinal and hormonal functions of the body, whilst some herbs such as Astragalus help to modulate the immune system, bring it more into balance to prevent the attack on the hair follicles. Many herbs (rehmannia being one example), are also valuable in helping to nourish the body and the nervous system.  Combined with mineral rich herbs, such as Nettles and Rosemary,  hair growth can be restored over time.   A rich hair and scalp lotion using Amla and other nourishing oils combined with Rosemary will help nourish the scalp when applied regularly.
